Distance: 1.5 hours (81km) 

Drive over the curving hills of Banks Peninsula to reach Akaroa, a historic seaside village with an unexpected French twist. Wander the colourful waterfront, spot dolphins on a harbour cruise, or settle in for a French-inspired lunch at The Little Bistro. For something more casual, perch yourselves in a sunny spot by the water, set up a picnic and soak up the views. 

Hanmer Springs: Soak and Stroll

Distance: 1 hour 45 minutes (134km) 

For a day of relaxation, head north to Hanmer Springs. Take a dip in the steamy thermal pools and let the day fade away to the backdrop of dramatic mountains, take a forest hike or horse trek, or simply stroll through the town and browse the boutique shops and cosy cafes. 

Arthur’s Pass: Into the Alps

Distance: 2.5 hours (150km) 

A drive west will take you into the dramatic Southern Alps via Arthur’s Pass National Park, stopping at the Otira Viaduct Lookout along the way. Once you arrive at the park, take the easy walking track towards Devils Punchbowl Waterfall and marvel at the awe-inspiring 131m high cascade of gushing water. While you’re here, keep a lookout for kea parrots, a large and stunning local bird that’s known to sail through the mountains. 

Waipara Valley: Wine and Wide-Open Views

Distance: 50 minutes (60km) 

The Waipara Valley  is a haven for wine enthusiasts. Famous for its award-winning Pinot Noir, Riesling and Pinot Gris, plus some breathtaking scenery to match, this region promises a multi-sensory experience. 

Begin your journey at Pegasus Bay Winery, a family-owned estate celebrated for its exceptional wines and picturesque gardens. Next, visit Waipara Springs Winery and Restaurant for a relaxed lunch paired with their signature wines—all while overlooking the tranquil vineyard. The valley is small but packed with beautifully diverse wineries, which makes it easy to hop from one place to another until you’ve found that special drop. Just remember, if you plan on drinking alcohol, always have a designated driver. 

Lyttelton and Sumner: A Coastal Loop

Distance: 30 minutes to Lyttelton (13km) 

Take an easy and scenic drive over the Port Hills to reach Lyttelton, a working port town packed with personality. Once the heart of Christchurch/Ōtautahi’s port trade, it’s now a creative hub full of art galleries, vintage shops and cafés. Visit on a Saturday to explore the Lyttelton Farmers Market, where you can sample fresh bread, local cheeses and handmade treats.
