Linkwater: The Quiet Side of the Sounds
Just 30 minutes from Picton/Waitohi, Linkwater is a tiny rural settlement that marks the turnoff to the Queen Charlotte Track, or the start of your journey toward Nydia Bay. If you’re up for an adventure, head to the Link Pathway. This 42-kilometer walking and cycling track connects Havelock, Linkwater and Anakiwa, and will reward you with a sneak peak at the upcoming Marlborough Sounds. Alternatively, you can explore the area by kayak with a guided sea kayaking tour, exploring the hidden coves that surround the Sounds.

Kaiuma Bay: A Detour to the Bay
Follow Kaiuma Bay Road west from Linkwater and you’ll come across Kaiuma Bay, a quietly beautiful inlet nestled in the Pelorus Sound. There’s very little development here, which means it’s an ideal place to roll out the picnic blanket and whisk away the hours to the backdrop of thick native bush, and the soundtrack of native birds. If you’re a seafood lover, try catching some local snapper or crack open some fresh greenshell mussels.
Nydia Bay: A Walking Wonderland
Nydia Bay isn’t fully accessible by car, which means you’ll have to park and continue the adventure on foot (or, if you’re feeling adventurous, by mountain bike). From Kaiuma Bay, take the Nydia Track through the lush forest, past amazing coastal views, all the way to the bay. At 27km, the track takes an epic two days to complete, but you can always take a short section of the track and get a taste of the experience without the massive effort. However, if you’re up for the challenge, it’s one that’s guaranteed to stay with you for life.
