Car Rental Greymouth Railway Station

New Zealand is a country filled with diverse, beautiful landscapes. From the rugged coast that hugs both islands to the alpine-filled inland, where you’ll find glacier lakes, volcanoes, and huge mountains, the scenery here is complex, beautiful, and different to any other country you have vacationed in.

Welcome to Greymouth Railway Station, which is in the South Island of New Zealand. Here, you’ll collect your Dollar rental keys, before embarking on your South Island adventure. The Greymouth Railway Station is the terminus of the TranzAlpine train line, which is considered one of the most beautiful train lines in the world. Perhaps once you’ve finished exploring Greymouth, you head to Christchurch via this journey and marvel at the impressive views, including the 75-metre-high Staircase Viaduct and the Southern Alps.

Your South Island vacation starts here, and what a perfect spot to make your base for any domestic travel. Greymouth is considered to be the heart of the West Coast, so leave plenty of time to explore the surrounding region with your Dollar rental.

Experience History at Shantytown in Greymouth

Greymouth has an extensive history of gold mining. Following the discovery of gold in the Taramakau valley in 1864, there were several gold rushes to Greymouth and the surrounding region. This can all be explored perfectly when visiting the Shantytown in Greymouth.

Shantytown is one of the best cultural and heritage tourist attractions in New Zealand. It’s a recreated pioneer town that was created due to the gold rushes of the 1860s on the West Coast. Located just ten kilometres outside of Greymouth, Shantytown gives incredible insight into what it was like to live in New Zealand during this period. It also demonstrates how the country came to be as it is today, with explanations into the colonization period of history.

Discover the Area from Greymouth Railway Station

One of the most visited attractions in Greymouth is the two-hour Point Elizabeth Walk. It passes through a scenic reserve, as well as several spots of historic interest. Starting from Rapahoe Beach, which is also a great spot for swimming in the summer, this walk will take you along the route past old gold mining sites, headlands, and native bushland.

One of the best local spots in Greymouth is Monteith’s. This brewery is somewhat of a local legend, with plenty of international and domestic tourists visiting all year round. Their beers are award-winning, so if you can enjoy them safely, make sure to pay a visit to the brewery. You can even learn the art of pouring your own beer while on a brewery tour!

For those that love to hike, the Paparoa Track is probably on your bucket list. A 56-kilometre one-way hike, you’ll journey through alpine tops, limestone karst landscapes, and plenty of incredible rainforests. It’s a 3-day one-way hike, so is not for the faint-hearted. But, it does promise incredible views throughout. Named in honour of the 29 miners who lost their lives in the Pike River Mine Disaster, it has been fully open since 2020.

There is plenty to do and see while staying in Greymouth. Use it as a base for your South Island adventures, and discover the important local history while you’re in town. Take the TranzAlpine through to Christchurch and enjoy the stunning views as you travel along the Southern Alps. Or, road trip your way through the South Island.
